This book uncovers the early Jewish, Scottish, and Stuart sources of "ancient" Cabalistic Freemasonry that flourished in Écossais lodges in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Drawing on architectural, technological, political, and religious documents, it provides real-world, historical grounding for the flights of visionary Temple building described in the rituals and symbolism of "high-degree" Masonry. The roots of mystical male bonding, accomplished through progressive initiation, are found in Stuart notions of intellectual and spiritual amicitia.
Despite the expulsion of the Stuart dynasty in 1688 and the establishment of a rival "modern" system of Hanoverian-Whig Masonry in 1717, the influence of "ancient" Scottish-Stuart Masonry on Solomonic architecture, Hermetic masques, and Rosicrucian science was preserved in lodges maintained by Jacobite partisans and exiles in Britain, Europe, and the New World.

Biographical note

Marsha Keith Schuchard, Ph.D. (1975) in English, University of Texas at Austin, has published extensively on eighteenth-century Cabalistic and "illuminist" Freemasonry and its influence on Swift, Ramsay, Swedenborg, and Blake.

Baruch (of Benedictus) de Spinoza legt in de zeventiende eeuw de basis voor een radicaal nieuwe kijk op mens en samenleving. Hij tracht de mens te begrijpen zoals hij is, niet zoals hij zou moeten zijn; de mens niet (veroordelen, maar onderzoeken, als een deel van de natuur. Met zijn naturalisme anticipeert Spinoza op het darwinisme: hij schetst de mens als een wezen dat vooral zijn voortbestaan (‘conatus’) nastreeft.

Toch kan het menselijke handelen niet herleid worden tot het rationeel nastreven van het eigen nut. De menselijke conditie vat Spinoza niet in termen van eigenbelang. De blije, gelukkige mens is juist niet zelfzuchtig, maar vrij en geëngageerd tegelijk. Blijheid betekent hier niet louter een gemoedsstemming, of een gevoel, maar de keuze voor een actief leven tegenover een passief ondergaan van de aandoeningen.

‘Blijheid’ en de ‘conatus’ zijn twee centrale begrippen in Spinoza’s Ethica. Deze bundel exploreert de rijkdom van dit complexe werk en toont de actualiteit van Spinoza’s buitengewone denken. Een confrontatie met Hobbes’ denken over zelfbehoud, macht en verlangen toont hoe relevant Spinoza’s denken in de actuele crisis is: zijn naturalisme leidt juist niet tot individualisme of egoïsme. Liefde en seksualiteit zijn voor Spinoza altijd een Blijheid, maar vormen toch de kern van de menselijke tragedie.

Andere thema’s zijn Spinoza’s naturalisme van de affecten, zijn schatplichtigheid aan de oudheid (epicurisme) in zijn denken over de natuur en de mogelijkheid van een politiek van de Blijheid. De Blijheid is tot slot ook een essentieel aspect van de gelukzaligheid, hét doel van de praktische filosofie. Hoe dit te bereiken, wordt besproken in vergelijking met de boeddhistische meditatie.

Met bijdragen van Herman De Dijn, Tinneke Beeckman, Miriam van Reijen, Marin Terpstra. Het boek bevat ook de vertaling van twee artikels geschreven door eminente Franse Spinozakenners: Alexandre Matheron en Laurent Bove.

Tinneke Beeckman (°1976) is gastdocente aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel en als postdoctoraal onderzoeker verbonden aan het Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Vlaanderen. Ze publiceerde onder meer over Nietzsche, Heidegger en Spinoza. Voor deze bundel verzorgde ze ook de vertaling uit het Frans.
