De Europese verlichting, de trots en vrucht van onze beschaving, was altijd een dekmantel voor culturele overheersing en kolonialisme.

Hoe is het zo ver gekomen? In dit bevlogen betoog onderzoekt filosoof Maarten Boudry de wortels van het progressieve verraad aan de verlichting, van het postmodernisme tot de opkomst van de groene beweging. En hij toont ons meteen ook hoe we ons geloof in vooruitgang kunnen terugwinnen. Boudry breekt een lans voor een nieuwe vooruitgangsbeweging die streeft naar onbegrensde groei, overvloed, openheid en technologische innovatie.

Maarten Boudry (1984) is schrijver, wetenschapsfilosoof en was van 2019 tot 2023 houder van de leerstoel Etienne Vermeersch aan de Universiteit Gent. Hij schreef onder meer de bestseller Waarom de wereld niet naar de knoppen gaat (2019), waarover Marcel Hulspas schreef: ‘Strijdlustig. 340 pagina’s lang belijdt Boudry zijn onverwoestbare geloof in de vooruitgang’ (de Volkskrant, ****). This book examines Diderot’s and d’Holbach’s views on determinism to illuminate some of the most important debates taking place in eighteenth-century Europe. Insisting on aspects of Diderot’s and d’Holbach’s thought that, to date, have been given scant, if any, scholarly attention, it proposes to restore both thinkers to their rightful position in the history of philosophy. The book problematises Diderot’s and d’Holbach’s atheism by showing their philosophy to be deeply rooted in the Christian tradition and offers a more nuanced and historicised interpretation of the so-called “Radical Enlightenment”, challenging the notions that this movement can be taken to be a perfectly coherent set of ideas and that it represents a complete break with “the old”. By examining Diderot’s and d’Holbach’s works in tandem and without post-romantic assumptions about originality and single authorship, it argues that the two philosophers’ texts should be taken as the product of a fascinating collaborative form of philosophical enquiry that perfectly reflects the sociable nature of intellectual production during the Enlightenment. The book further proposes a fresh interpretation of such crucial texts as the Système de la nature and Jacques le fataliste et son maître and unveils a key web of concepts that will help researchers to better understand Enlightenment philosophy and literature as a whole.

“Vrijheid, gelijkheid, broederlijkheid!” De mantra is in die mate deel van onze ideologie geworden dat we er nog nauwelijks op letten. Van de gevels van bijna alle gemeentehuizen in Frankrijk tot de wekelijkse zittingen van Vrijmetselarij, en van de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens uit 1948 tot de prachtige hymne van de Europese Unie die, via Friedrich Schiller en Ludwig van Beethoven, nog maar eens de band met de verlichtingsidealen benadrukt, we kunnen er niet omheen.

Vandaag, meer dan 230 jaar na de eerste verklaring van de rechten van de mens en de republikeinse burger, zijn we dringend toe aan een kritische revisie van deze algemeen aanvaarde ideologie: wat betekent die vrijheid werkelijk in een wereld die, opnieuw, steeds ongelijker wordt? We staren ons blind op de extreemrechtse en fundamentalistische openlijke vijanden van onze democratie en merken niet dat hun ideeën en praktijken, van censuur op ongewenste meningen tot de feitelijke afbraak van de cruciale “scheiding der machten”, overal in onze samenlevingen wortel geschoten heeft.

Vandaar het voorstel om, na grondig onderzoek van die “vrijheid en gelijkheid”, de iets te hoog gegrepen term “broederlijkheid” te vervangen door “empathie”. Niet alleen is dit minder ambitieus en meer haalbaar, maar het legt ook een ecologische band met de dierenwereld, in een periode waarin we allen samen existentieel bedreigd worden.

Abstract

This wide-ranging, thorough and superbly illustrated study of Freemasonry's influence on Western culture, especially in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, follows Professor Curl's previous book, The Art and Architecture of Freemasonry (1991), which was hailed at the time not only as "an immensely useful, and sane, introduction to a field often fraught with speculative sensationalism", but as "a mine of information", and one of the most "original and important" contributions towards a greater understanding of the Enlightenment published in recent times. It won the coveted Sir Banister Fletcher Award as Best Book of the Year in 1992. Now, building on his earlier work, Curl has hugely expanded his investigations, showing how aspects of Masonic ideas have permeated the design of buildings, parks, gardens, and cemeteries, as well as much else. His Glossary outlines some of the complex ideas and iconography of the Craft (notably the symbolic and moral significance of the Architect's and Mason's instruments and tools), and the extensive Bibliography contains an enormous amount of material to stimulate further research, not least into the curious phenomenon of antipathy towards Freemasonry by authoritarian closed minds and totalitarian bigots. The illustrations are exceptional, and are accompanied by detailed captions (themselves as illustrated history of elements found in Freemasonry). It is a curious fact that many historians have avoided Freemasonry through prejudice and timidity, but in this work Professor Curl has grasped the nettle, and shows there is a hugh wealth of material available (much unaccountably hidden from view or deliberately ignored for reasons that defy analysis), some of which will whet the most jaded of appetites.

In the small but very active international network of historians of Freemasonry, James Stevens Curl is an eminence grise. His beautiful publications on history and architecture are manifold, and Freemasonry has a distinct place in his oeuvre.

Freemasonry & the Enlightenment: Architecture, Symbols, & Influences is an enriched and expanded development of an earlier work by the author, this book being prefaced by that other eminent British historian of Freemasonry, Andrew Prescott. After an elaborate and exceedingly up-to- date introduction to the complex history of the genesis and first steps of the organisation, Curl considers Masonic influence in iconography, architecture, garden design, tombs and music. His thesis is that the influence of the order has been grossly underestimated and that Masonic lore holds a considerable place in the buildings and imagery of the 18th and 19th centuries, both in Britain and on the Continent (with its profoundly different Freemasonry).

Obviously, lodge buildings themselves are treated extensively - for example, the gradual development of the colossus of Great Queen Street in London - but Curl also considers the Masonic element of constructions that have no formal use by the Craft. A passionate lover of classical buildings, Curl holds post-1945 architecture in low esteem. Whether dismissing it tongue in cheek or with overt contempt, the author rejects its lack of references, meaning and symbolism. He yearns for older models where meaningfulness was at the centre of a humane art of building, Masonic meaning being an important part of that. I am not quite sure that all of today's architect-Freemasons would readily agree with the whole of the author's argument.

But whatever one thinks of his aesthetical (and even ethical) appreciations, Curl makes an important point when he stresses the richness of allusion and symbolism in the classical architecture he cherishes.
