Ce livre est destiné à tous ceux qui souhaitent avoir des informations simples et pratiques sur les Hauts Grades maçonniques dont on ne parle jamais dans les ateliers symboliques, ceux des premiers degrés où l’on est reçu comme apprenti, élevé comme compagnon et initié à la maîtrise. L’auteur a reçu un enseignement alchimique en 1964 et a été initié dans une loge maçonnique en 1973. Il a été Grand Secrétaire puis Grand-Maître de la Grande Loge de France (1988-1990). Titulaire du 33ème et dernier degré du rite écossais ancien et accepté depuis 1989, il a écrit et publié plusieurs ouvrages sur l’alchimie et la franc-maçonnerie. Il est un haut-fonctionnaire retraité, chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur et commandeur de l’ordre national du Mérite. Il a occupé des postes dans plusieurs ministères et a terminé sa carrière comme directeur général de l’hôpital Saint-Anne à Paris.

 Samuel Hartlib (c1600-62), a great seventeenth-century 'intelligencer' and man of science, set out to record all human knowledge and make it universally available for the education of all mankind. His correspondence, which runs to over 25,000 folios of original materials, came to the University Library in the 1960s. The full-text electronic edition realises Hartlib's vision some 300 years later.

The project's objective was to create a complete electronic edition with full-text transcription and facsimile images of all 25,000 seventeenth-century manuscripts. This seven-year project culminated in the publication in 1996 of two CD-ROMs by University Microfilms in Michigan. An enlarged edition, incorporating many Hartlib materials from libraries around the world, was published on CD-ROM by the Humanities Research Institute in July 2002. This new, online edition provides free access to all the content available on the original CD-ROM versions. Full introductory and background information will be made available shortly.

En apparence, la Franc-maçonnerie est diverse et multiple, chaque franc-maçon interprétant à sa guise les symboles et les rites de cet Ordre. Cet état de choses est rendu possible du fait que ces symboles et ces rites nous sont présentés sans que nous soit fournie la clef de leur interprétation : la Franc-maçonnerie est un livre muet.

Cependant, l’Ordre nous indique nettement de quel côté il convient de chercher cette clef. Sur l’autel des serments, il y a la Bible, le Volume de la Loi sacrée. C’est donc premièrement avec l’aide de ce livre qu’il convient de fonder l’effort d’interprétation.

2023 marks the tercentenary of the publication in London of The Constitutions of the
Freemasons – the ‘1723 Constitutions’ – a book whose Enlightenment principles provide the
philosophical foundations of Modern Freemasonry.
Many Masonic histories have been concerned with ‘when’ and ‘what’. Inventing the Future
examines the context, the contents and the consequences of the 1723 Constitutions, and seeks
to explain ‘why’.

The 1723 Constitutions is constructed on Enlightenment values that lie at the core of modern
Freemasonry both in England and internationally. But the 1723 Constitutions and modern
Freemasonry were not simply a product of the Enlightenment. They also impacted upon it,
acting as a vector for the transmission of Freemasonry’s philosophical principles nationally
and internationally.

This book sets out those principles, considers the people involved and explores the framework
within which their ideas were formed. And it discusses how the Constitutions evolved. In
1730 it was taken by the Grand Lodge of Ireland as the model for the Irish Constitutions; the
book was re-printed virtually verbatim by Benjamin Franklin in 1734 for use in America; it
was translated and circulated widely throughout Europe in the 1730s and 1740s; and in the
1750s it was indirectly the basis for Ahiman Rezon, the Constitutions of the Antients Grand
Lodge and, after the War of Independence, of the State Grand Lodges in the United States of
America.

Understanding the context and content of the 1723 Constitutions explains the origins of
modern Freemasonry and the relationship between Freemasonry and Society today.
