Synopsis

De gulden snede is een verhouding tussen twee afstanden, zoals de lengte en de breedte van dit boek, die precies overeenkomt met een welbepaald getal Φ (phi) gelijk aan 1,61803399… Dit getal Φ blijkt bijzondere eigenschappen te hebben. “Het is het getal dat het verst ligt van alle breuken.” “Het is het enige positieve getal dat gelijk is aan zijn omgekeerde plus één.” De decimale vorm ‘1,61803399…’ roept duidelijk geen esthetische gevoelens op, maar het getal heeft wel een grote wiskundige aantrekkingskracht door zijn eigenschappen. Ook in de natuur verschijnt hier en daar het getal Φ bij benadering en lijkt het aan de oorsprong te liggen van natuurlijke schoonheid. Ten slotte, toegepast in bouwkunde en schilderkunst, geeft Φ aanleiding tot een verhouding, ondanks de duidelijk asymmetrie, die bijzonder evenwichtig oogt. Alleen zal blijken dat het gebruik van Φ in composities en architectuur dateert van vorige eeuw, en dat het overal zien van de gulden snede zowel in de kunsten als in de natuur een vrome wens is. Er bestaan heel wat misverstanden omtrent het voorkomen van de gulden snede en daar gaat dit boek dieper op in. Tevens toont het alle fraaie kanten van de wiskunde. Het is bestemd voor iedereen die van de gulden snede het fijne wil weten en het al dan niet voorkomen van Φ op een grondige manier wil verklaren. Leerkrachten kunnen het in secundair als hoger onderwijs gebruiken om de geheimen van Φ te onthullen of om de schoonheid van de wiskundige wereld te laten zien. De bewerkingen zijn elementair, de afleidingen verlopen stap voor stap, maar alles is nodig om het verhaal van de gulden snede helemaal uit de doeken te doen. Het mooie aan die graduele opbouw is dat de vele bescheiden stapjes samen prachtige inzichten opleveren. Zo gebruiken we wiskunde in dit boek als didactische methode om de talrijke aspecten van Φ met elkaar te verbinden. Het boek is bovendien modulair opgevat, dus moeilijkere delen laten zich overslaan.

English Freemasonry and the First World War By The Library and Museum of Freemasonry When Britain declared war on 4th August 1914, English Freemasonry faced unprecedented circumstances. Freemasonry was and is non-political, and the discussion of politics at Masonic meetings was and is forbidden, but during this period the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body for freemasonry in England and Wales and across much of the British Empire, had to deal with the impact of global war. Written by staff at the Library and Museum and drawing on its extensive collections, the book looks at the impact of the First World War and its aftermath on English Freemasonry. It examines the effect of the First World War on Freemasons in England, on Freemasons fighting on the Western Front and elsewhere and on Freemasons held as prisoners of war. The war created new, war-related charitable causes for which Freemasons raised funds, prompted a response from the established Masonic charities and fostered the formation of a major new Masonic charity in the post war period. Freemasons’ Hall in Great Queen Street in London, completed in 1933, was dedicated to the Freemasons that died in the war. It was one of many different types of memorials created by Freemasons. The end of the war saw a significant increase in membership of Masonic lodges and geographical expansion, which created new challenges for the Grand Lodge. The richly illustrated book draws on the extensive collections held by the Library and Museum and will coincide with an exhibition called 'English Freemasonry and the First World War' to be held at The Library and Museum of Freemasonry at Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London.
