La franc-maçonnerie s’épanouit en France au XVIIIe siècle, développant la philosophie initiatique de la Lumière, fondée sur la foi en la raison, la croyance en la perfectibilité de l’homme, l’affirmation qu’un Être Suprême donne un but à l’univers. La franc-maçonnerie française se déclara Patria gentis humanae, la patrie de tous les peuples. Ce fut son credo et sa déclaration de compétence universelle comme de principe. Mais la révolution française conduisit à des coupures entre frères bourgeois, aristocrates et militaires comme à un chamboulement dévastateur augmenté d’une perte de mémoire.

Un personnage clef fut Augustin Jean François Chaillon de Jonville. Il géra la maçonnerie française et envoya des missi dominici pour diffuser la parole Urbi et Orbi, à l’ensemble du monde. Il dirigea, ouvrit les loges, présida les tenues de Grandes Loges, créa des rituels, organisa les hauts grades, s’entoura d’un collège de frères compétents.

En cheminant dans les pas de Chaillon de Jonville, le lecteur curieux découvre la topographie du Marais et comprend le lent et minutieux processus spécifique de construction de la franc-maçonnerie française, ainsi que ses nombreuses différences avec la franc-maçonnerie anglaise.

La franc-maçonnerie comporte plusieurs rites, le plus répandu dans le monde aujourd’hui étant le Rite Écossais Ancien et Accepté. Il prit sa forme en 33 grades, mais non son titre, à Charleston aux États-Unis, lorsque le premier Suprême Conseil y fut établi en 1801. Dans une circulaire qu’il envoya dans le monde en 1802, il affirmait que ce rite avait été créé en 1786 par le roi de Prusse, Frédéric II, en tant que Grand Commandeur de l’Ordre de Prince du Royal Secret, Ordre dont la création aurait été ratifiée à Berlin en 1762.

Or ces affirmations sont autant de légendes, ce que montre ce livre : les Constitutions de 1762, dont le premier manuscrit connu date de 1771, reprennent un texte voté par la Grande Loge de France en 1763, l’Ordre du Royal Secret fut créé à Saint-Domingue par Estienne Morin avant sa mort en 1771, et la Constitution du 33e grade provient de Charleston.

This work is divided into three parts,proposing three distinct and original theories, aiming to show the clearly identifiable, ongoing evolutionary trends extending from the origins of Freemasonry. This book charts the transformational processes which combine in a peak between the end of the seventeenth and the start of the eighteenth century. A period stretching from the birth of the Grand Lodge of London and Westminster and the publication of the Anderson Constitutions (1717-1723), to conclude with an in-depth examination of the innovative ritual published through the work of the Lodge of Reconciliation (established1813-1816 on the occasion of the constitution of the United Grand Lodge of England with the aim of identifying a ritual homogeneity between all the traditions of the two antagonist Grand Lodges of the Moderns and the Ancients), and the subsequent rituality of the Royal Arch.The latter ritual forms will illustrate how, throughout its evolution, the process of Masonic consciential development has been transformed from a system of morals veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols into a complex and profound mystic pathway.The pathway illustrated in this work highlights how, on completion of its ritual evolution, to all intents and purposes Freemasonry should be considered as a form, or rather representative of that which authors such as Guénon, Evola,Schuon, Coomaraswamy and other authors of the perennialist school of thought define as Tradition. By Tradition, one refers to an entity inspired by a supratemporal truth that traverses all human time; the traditional forms therefore impart a wisdom of divine origin.By definition, each traditional doctrine possesses an immutable essence, although its methodology may be re-established within the framework of as specific conceptual style in line with the range of potential modes of intuition and according to human circumstances.
